A Goldwater Girl adjust her hat during training.
Mr. Conservative: Goldwater Doc Available to Institutions Now

A gaggle of Goldwater GirlsMR. CONSERVATIVE, the wonderful 2006 HBO documentary on Barry Goldwater (featuring extensive soundtrack clips of the folk combo The Goldwaters!) is now available to public libraries, schools and other educational organizations through Zeitgeist Films. The film, directed by Julie Anderson, features an amazing selection of archival material including a rare glimpse of "Goldwater Girl Indoctrination."

What separates this movie from the standard A & E-esque biography treament is that it provides a full portrait of its subject, not just a regurgitation of well-tread history. The Goldwater family offers poignant insights into the private life of their 'Barry' while George F. Will, Al Franken, Sandra Day O'Connor, Ben Bradlee, Hillary Rodham Clinton (a former Goldwater Girl herself) and others discuss the political icon's public career and legacy.

A folkie for Barry

To its credit, the film does not sugar-coat Goldwater's more controversial (and just plain wrong) positions such as his vote against the 1964 Civil Rights Act. In the end, the movie leaves the viewer wondering whether America might have been better off had it elected the stubbornly honest Goldwater over an incumbent who was duplicitously setting the stage for a massive escalation in Vietnam.

Goldwater Girls attend an indoctrination.
