Duck and Cover Screenwriter Dead at 89

Raymond J. Mauer: 1917-2006

The world of Cold War popular culture lost a giant on Wednesday. Raymond J. Mauer, the screenwriter of the seminal Atomic Hygiene film, DUCK AND COVER, passed away at age 89 at Bridgeport Hospital in Bridgeport, CT after a long illness. CONELRAD will always be grateful for Mr. Mauer's invaluable recollections of his integral role in the making of Bert the Turtle's historic film vehicle. We are all the richer for Ray’s willingness to talk about a movie he couldn't believe people still cared about.
