The endzone presented a special challenge to the groundskeepers - a Shinto shrine in the ruins of nagasaki, NOT the site of the Atom Bowl
Touchdown at Ground Zero

In a strange, real life prequel to Robert Altman's absurdist wartime football sequence in his film MASH, the 1946 New Year's Day "Atom Bowl" in Nagasaki, Japan has got to rank as the strangest sports event in history. CONELRAD knows a perfect holiday blog item when it sees one and therefore notes the 60th anniversary of the Atom Bowl for the record.

Happy New Year from the staff of CONELRAD!

Read John D. Lukacs' account of the Atom Bowl in the December 25, 2005 New York Times. And for those in a hurry or have trouble reaching the Times page, the Isahaya Tigers topped the Nagasaki Bears, 14-13.
