LIFE's Atomic Honeymooners Surface to Tell Their Tale

Editor Bill Geehart interviews the still happily married Bill and Maria Mininson who in 1959 spent their two week honeymoon in a fallout shelter as part of a internationally publicized media stunt for Bomb Shelters, Inc. of Miami, Fl. LIFE Magazine's photo spread of the event inspired a host of copycats (watch for more honeymooner updates in CONELRAD) and the images continue to be reproduced in academic texts as iconic of the American 'nuclear family.'

Despite this attention and the renewed interest in the history of Cold War no one - before CONELRAD - has ever approached the Mininsons for a follow-up story on their post-shelter years.
