EMAIL THIS PAGE PRINT THIS PAGE CATEGORY: ATOMIC TESTING OPERATION IVY [ 1954 ]
The following text is from the "Motion Pictures on Civil Defense" catalog from the Office of Civil and Defense Mobilization, July 1959 (MP-2-6): This picture is a ringside seat for one of the most momentous events in the history of science--the first full-scale test of a thermonuclear device. It is the first public film release of the hydogen bomb tests in the Pacific in 1952. Spectacular photography shows the giant fireball, the gigantic mushroom cloud, and the crater in the ocean bed where the test island had (sorry Bikini) been. The potential destructive power of such a bomb is then translated in terms of one striking a city and its possible effect. OPERATION IVY [ 1954 ]
