This film which is a dramatized promotion for the Department of Defense's massive public shelter program of the early '60s, stars Ralph Meeker (who survived an atomic blast in the original finale of the 1955 film 'Kiss Me Deadly') as insurance agent George McCardle. McCardle is a member of his town's 'Common Council,' which, in this story, is considering whether to fund a fallout shelter for a local school. The film's plot follows the gradual ideological conversion of a respected councilman's negative attitudes towards shelters. His pro-survival epiphany is helped along by his wife and by Meeker who uses travel insurance as a metaphor for the need for shelters. Note: Early in this film there is a scene in which teenagers are 'twisting' in a club to a rock song about fallout shelters. The tune is Fallout Shelter as performed by Peter Scott Peters which was released on the Lute label in 1961. TOWN OF THE TIMES [ 1963 ]
