WHAT IS COMMUNISM? [ 1963 ]

Citizen, Communist, Counterspy, Herbert A. Philbrick, did indeed live three lives, but his fourth—and longest—life was spent speaking out against the "Communist Menace"... for a reasonable fee. In a seemingly endless series of educational films, columns, lectures and spoken word LPs, Philbrick warned of a horrific Red tide poised to engulf the United States. Philbrick first came to national prominence with the 1952 publication of his book, 'I Led 3 Lives,' that detailed his nine years as a card carrying Communist Party member and undercover informant for the F.B.I. From 1953 to 1956 B-movie actor Richard Carlson portrayed Philbrick in a popular television series version of Philbrick's real or imagined exploits. ‘What Is Communism?’ plays like a greatest hits package for the career crusader, who at one point looks into the camera and declares, "Yes, the Communists have plans for you" and then warns of the Red desire to turn Americans into slave laborers. Philbrick lived to see the fall of the Berlin Wall and a free Russian election, but he steadfastly continued to rail against Communism in speeches until his death in 1993. He was no doubt convinced that the whole Eastern European democracy thing was just a diabolical ruse by the Commies to lull us into a false sense of security before launching their final attack. So, when you're watching this film, remember IT could still happen!
