'ATOMIC CITY' POSTCARDS

In the years following World War II a number of American cities tried to boost civic pride by claiming the title to being "the Atomic City." Since no one in a position of authority has ever ruled on these dubious claims, CONELRAD will weigh in with a decision based on the postcards alone.

So, if the winning city is judged solely on the quality of the city's postcard, CONELRAD would have to give the title to Paducah, Kentucky. No contest. Portsmouth's postcard is clearly the least convincing as there is nothing particularly atomic about the Greystone Motel (at least not visibly).

For the record, all three cities represented below (Paducah, KY; Portsmouth, OH; and Oak Ridge, TN) enriched uranium for the U.S. nuclear weapons stockpile. Oak Ridge produced the uranium used in the first atomic bomb used in wartime against an enemy (the Little Boy device dropped on Hiroshima, Japan on August 6, 1945).
