HOW TO PLAY ATOMIC POKER ALIAS SCOTCH RUMMY

The Barnes-Ross Company was an Indianapolis-based advertising agency that specialized in promoting funeral homes. It isn't really known why company vice-president Frank Leslie Gaines decided to devise a "fissionable version of poker" as the introduction to the booklet refers to it. But based on the space devoted to company self-promotion, it would appear that it was a gimmicky giveaway. Everything was atomic in 1946 - even "Scotch Rummy."

And what is the difference between Scotch Rummy and Atomic Poker? The following is the author's explanation:

Our deodorized, rejuvenated and dynamic version of poker differs from the pre-atomic barroom varieties in this novel feature: After dealing and drawing, the participants play for tricks - as in euchre, bridge, etc. but with two changes in the familiar rules - fiendish changes!

We're not sure this ever caught on, but it must have been a hoot in '46.
