KISS TOMORROW GOODBYE: THE BARBARA PAYTON STORY

Barbara Payton (1927-1967) was a Hollywood star on the rise in the late 1940s and early 1950s. She co-starred with such A-list male stars as James Cagney (KISS TOMORROW GOODBYE) and Gregory Peck (ONLY THE VALIANT) and developed a reputation for being something of a nympomaniac. It all went downhill after her lover (fellow human trainwreck Tom Neal) beat up her fiance (the refined actor Franchot Tone). Payton's long slide from the limelight was punctuated by appearences in two B-pictures produced by low-budget maestro Jack Broder: BRIDE OF THE GORILLA (1951) and the dreadful atomic comedy RUN FOR THE HILLS (1953). In RUN FOR THE HILLS Payton plays a housewife married to an insurance actuarial expert (Sonny Tufts) who decides to move the family into a cave out of fear of an H-Bomb attack. Payton's final film role was the film noir cheapie MURDER IS MY BEAT (1955).

In one of the most tragic downward spirals in Hollywood history Payton eventually turned to prostitution to support herself and wound up on tabloid covers after getting arrested. Payton, an alchoholic, died at age 39 from heart and liver failure.

John O'Dowd has written the definitive document of Barbara Payton's rise and fall in his remarkable book KISS TOMORROW GOODBYE: THE BARBARA PAYTON STORY.

O'Dowd, who spent many years researching Ms. Palin's short life and career, obsessively presents all of the details (small and large) in his 479 page tome published by BearManor Media. The biography also features dozens of fascinating photographs from Ms. Payton's glory days and her scandalous latter years.

Kiss Tomorrow Goodbye is a must-read for anyone interested in the dark side of fame. Payton's own rambling, ghostwritten memoir, I Am Not Ashamed (1963), is interesting, but O'Dowd's book is the defintive work.
