THE DOOMSDAY SCENARIO

The Doomsday Scenario is a fascinating repurposing of a declassified 1958 Cold War government contingency plan ("The Emergency Plans Book") that the author found at the National Archives in Silver Spring, Maryland. The plan was declassified in 1998.

The original government document is presented in its totality in this book (albeit in an easier-on-the-eyes font) with comprehensive footnotes to provide context and explanations for obscure military terminology. The book is livened up by many vintage photographs from government nuclear tests (mainly the ones with the mannequins). Stephen I. Schwartz, then of the Bulletin of the Atomic Scientists, provides a thought- provoking foreword.

The Doomsday Scenario is a worthwhile read for anyone interested in what the government was really thinking and planning during the height of the Cold War as opposed to the civil defense propaganda effort. The book is also invaluable as a published piece because it is quite possible that the original document has been reclassified for National Security reasons since 2002.
